How do I become a great Scrum Master?

Are you aspiring to become a great Scrum Master? Follow these six simple steps to enhance your chances of securing your first Scrum Master job.

Before diving into the steps, ensure you understand what a Scrum Master is.

The 6 Steps to Become a Great Scrum Master

Below, we outline six steps to prepare you for success in your first SM role.

Step 1 – Understand the Scrum Framework

Many overlook reading the official Scrum Guide and the Agile Manifesto, The Scrum Guide defines the Scrum Framework. This foundational step is crucial. The Scrum Guide is only 13 pages long and must be studied to grasp the nuances of Scrum fully, each word has a specific meaning and has been selected carefully.

Step 2 – Obtain Certification to Deepen Your Knowledge

While the Scrum Framework is easy to grasp, mastery requires deeper understanding. Pursuing a Scrum Master certification, such as the Certified Scrum Master (CSM®) from Scrum Alliance, provides essential insights and prepares you comprehensively for the role.

The  CSM® certification from Scrum Alliance is globally recognized as the gold standard for Scrum Master certifications. By attending a CSM® certification, you are assured of a world-class trainer with practical experience, vetted by an expert panel.

Step 3 – Apply Scrum in Practice Whenever Possible

Even without a formal Scrum Master title, practice applying the Scrum Framework, tools, and practices in various scenarios. A true SM is a servant-leader who can make an impact regardless of formal designation.

Step 4 – Join and Engage with Agile Communities

Networking within local agile communities offers continuous learning opportunities and invaluable networking connections. For instance, consider joining local User Groups like SUGSA in South Africa or explore Scrum Alliance’s global User Groups here.

Step 5 – Develop Your Scrum Master Skills

Beyond understanding the Scrum Framework, as a great Scrum Master you need to develop the crucial skills such as facilitation, coaching, training, and mentoring. Consider certifications like ICAgile Agile Team Facilitation Certification (ICP-ATF), ICAgile Coaching Certification (ICP-ACC), and the Training From the BACK of the Room (TBR) course to enhance these skills.

Step 6 – Prepare for Your Scrum Master Job Application

With the foundational knowledge and practical experience gained from Steps 1-5, you’re ready to apply for SM roles confidently. Highlight your education, practical experience, community involvement, and skill development during interviews to demonstrate your readiness and commitment.

As someone with years of experience hiring SMs and reviewing over 1000 CVs, here’s what I prioritise:

Getting your foot in the door often hinges on having the right education (Step 2). While it may seem unfair, it’s the quickest way to sift through stacks of CVs.

During interviews, I focus on practical applications rather than textbook answers. What truly impresses me are real-world stories showcasing diverse implementation scenarios (Step 3). This demonstrates a deep mastery of Scrum. Step 4, joining a community, indicates a commitment to ongoing learning. Being a Scrum Master is a continuous journey beyond certification.

Lastly, Step 5 highlights your dedication to the role’s demands and confirms you possess the essential skills.

Conclusion

Embark on your journey to becoming a successful Scrum Master with confidence and persistence. Each step you take contributes to your growth and expertise in this dynamic role. Good luck!
